Can your car be tracked when it's off?

Turning the key off feels like it should turn everything off. For most trackers, it doesn't. Here's which kinds keep working with the engine off, and what actually stops each one.
Short answer
Yes, in most cases. Factory telematics modems stay in standby so they can answer remote commands, OBD-II port trackers get constant battery power, and battery-powered trackers and AirTags don’t need the car at all. Turning the car off stops almost none of them.

The factory modem never fully sleeps
Here’s an easy test. If your manufacturer’s app can locate, unlock, or remote-start your car while it’s parked and off, the modem is awake and connected. It has to be, or those commands couldn’t reach it. That same connection can report where the car is parked.

Why OBD-II trackers keep running
The OBD-II port under your dash has constant battery power on most vehicles, so anything plugged in stays powered with the ignition off. Many plug-in trackers sleep to save power and wake up when the car moves. Check the port: anything plugged in that you didn’t put there deserves a closer look.
Battery trackers and AirTags don’t care
